At one time it was common to combine storm water and sanitary sewer systems.
Now all new sewer construction consists of separate storm and sanitary sewers.
The storm sewers collect run-off water on roadways and direct it to natural
drainage systems such as rivers. The sanitary sewer system collects wastewater
and directs it to the Water Pollution Control Plant on West Gore Street for
treatment.
Stratford's sanitary sewer system is made
up of 140 km of sewer mains varying in size from 8 inches to 48 inches. It
is mainly gravity fed with some areas requiring pumping. An average 3.5 million
imperial gallons of waster per day move through the system to the Water Pollution
Control Plant. Here primary, secondary and tertiary treatment take place.
At present the plant capacity is 6 million imperial gallons per day.
The storm sewer and sanitary systems are
owned and operated by the City of Stratford. The sewage treatment plant is
owned by the City of Stratford and the operation is contracted to the Ontario
Clean Water Agency. (O.C.W.A.)
