Pay-As-You-Waste Program
Pay as you waste, what is it, who is affected?
If you place garbage out for collection here in Stratford you will be paying
direct for the cost of collecting and disposing of that garbage at the landfill
site. The pay as you waste system treats garbage like a utility where decreased
usage means decreased costs. All garbage placed out for collection needs
to be tagged for collection.
How do I tag my garbage?
Garbage can be placed out in three ways:
a) in bags
b) in garbage cans
c) in tied bundles
Remember To:
1. Wrap the tag around the neck of a bag or the handle of a can. Tags will be
thrown out with the bag or torn off the handle of a can each time it is set
out.
2. Stick the tag to itself; do not stick it flat on the surface of the bag.
3. The tag is not a twist tie, so do not try to tie your bag with it.
4. If the lid cannot be placed on the garbage can it is too full to be picked
up.
RATES (effective January 1st, 2012)
All materials accepted for land filling, composting or recycling are charged at the following rate:
$73.50 per Metric Tonne
Loads of recyclables, brush and yard waste less then 200 kilograms (440 pounds) are accepted at no charge.
Up to 5 bags or cans of waste are accepted at $2.75 per bag or can. More than 5 bags or cans are weighed.
All loads are weighed at the discretion of the Scale House operator.
There is a minimum charge of $15.00 for all weighed loads.

Where do I buy tags?
Tags are available at Stratford City Hall, the
Kiwanis Centre and several small stores in any
quantity from several distribution points including
East End Variety, Cambria Quick Stop, Festival Variety,
Huron Variety, Petro Canada, Mornington Variety,
Kelley's Variety, Blowes Stationary
on Wellington, Hallmark/Blowes in the mall,
Smoke Plus Variety, Sobey's Inc., Joe’s Variety, 7-Eleven, Video 99 and
Convenience, Zehrs, Erie Convenience, and Giant Tiger.
How do I dispose of large items?
White Goods
The City of Stratford currently collects large appliances or white goods on a
monthly collection. Residents pay $40 for an appliance that contains or may have
contained freon and $22 for one that does not contain freon. The item is collected,
emptied of freon if necessary, and recycled or repaired. This program will continue
as part of the Pay as You Waste System. These items are not accepted at the landfill
site.
Large Items
A large item is any item larger or heavier than
a bundle described in the chart (a chesterfield
or desk for example). Large items will need
to be tagged for pick up and will be collected
on your regular garbage route. If you are disposing
of such items, a tag can be purchased at the
City Hall Engineering Department. Large item
tags cost $10.00. Large items are also accepted
at the landfill site at $73.50 per tonne.
