Waste reduction efforts in Stratford were initiated in the mid 1970's with a
newspaper and a glass recycling collection depot. Since that time an aggressive waste reduction program has been implemented.
The program has included:
- curbside recycling,
- hazardous waste collection,
- organics collection and composting,
- appliance recycling,
- curbside exchanges and community based educational programs.
The adoption of the City's "Pay as You Waste" System
for garbage collection saw a 62% increase in recycling and a reduction in residential
garbage of 35%.
This program also saw the City receive the Recycling Council of Ontario's Waste Minimization Award and the Canadian
Association of Municipal Administrators Environmental Award for an outstanding contribution to the local Environment.
