Stratford Named Smart City, October 2010
On Thursday, October 21, 2010, the City of Stratford was recognized as one of the Top 21 most intelligent communities in the world by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF). This is the first year that Stratford has been honoured with this designation. The New York-based think-tank announced that Stratford has made its prestigious list of Smart21 Communities of 2011, recognizing those who have embraced the broadband economy and use technology to enhance competitiveness, innovation and inclusion within it. The Intelligent Community Forum studies the economic and social development of the 21st Century community. ICF seeks to share the best practices of the world’s Intelligent Communities in adapting to the demands of the Broadband Economy, in order to help communities everywhere find sustainable renewal and growth.
This year’s application theme was Health in the Intelligent Community, which examines efforts by local government, institutions and businesses to improve the delivery and management of healthcare using information and communications technology in order to enhance the health of residents, reduce costs and create business opportunities for local employers.
Stratford now advances to the next round of the competition, which will narrow the global field to the Top 7. The City will be studied further and will provide additional data to the ICF evaluation committee. It has been a team process under the leadership of Mayor Dan Mathieson that included citizens, many city departments, the Stratford Public Library, local businesses, the healthcare industry, technology associations, educational institutions, and several supportive vendors who have helped Stratford achieve this recognition.
Of the 21 finalists at this stage, six are from the U.S., four from Canada (Windsor-Essex, Quebec City and Winnipeg), two from China and one each from the U.K., France, Netherlands, Greece, Hungary, India, Taiwan, Australia and Brazil.
With a population of 32,000, Stratford is the smallest city among the 21. The largest city, Chongqing, has 1,000 times as many people, with a population of 32 million.
