Firefighter/Child Restraint Technician Scott Petrie verifies the installation of a child's car seat.

The Stratford Fire Department in conjunction with the Perth District Health Unit began its Child Restraint Inspection program in 2001. The Fire Department's commitment to all aspects of public safety has resulted in hundreds of unsafe and improper child seat installations corrected. Trained firefighters are readily available to inspect your child seats by appointment. The firefighters also offer their services off duty at car seat clinics held throughout the county, please check the Perth District Health Unit website for clinic dates and times.

Statistics consistently show that around 80% of child restraints are improperly installed and/or used incorrectly, also of note is that car accidents are one of the number one causes of child fatalities between the ages of one to nine. Properly installed and correctly used restraints can reduce the number of fatalities dramatically.

Should you have any questions regarding your child seat, please do not hesitate to contact the Fire Department at: 519-271-3212.
